When asking most adults to reflect on their early education, they quickly respond with an anecdote about the relationships they had with their teachers. These relationships become the building blocks for creating a safe and valued learning environment. Teachers demonstrate this respect and rapport through body language - nods, gestures, smiles; and through the spoken word. In classrooms where this is evident in a high degree, students feel valued and are treated with dignity by their teacher and other adults. Remember the saying, "People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel."
